Andrew Irvine (mountaineer)
British mountaineer who vanished on Everest with George Mallory.
Andrew Comyn "Sandy" Irvine was a British mountaineer born on 8 April 1902 in Birkenhead, Cheshire. He was one of six children; his father, William Fergusson Irvine, was a historian with Scottish and Welsh ancestry, and his mother, Lilian Davies-Colley, came from an old Cheshire family. Irvine was a cousin of journalist Lyn Irvine, pioneering surgeon Eleanor Davies Colley, and political activist Harriet Shaw Weaver. He attended Birkenhead School and Shrewsbury School, where he showed a natural talent for engineering, often improvising fixes or improvements to mechanical devices. During the First World War, he sent the War Office designs for a synchronisation gear that would let a machine gun fire through a spinning propeller without damaging the blades, and also a gyroscopic stabiliser for aircraft. A gifted rower, he starred at the 1919 Henley Peace Regatta with the Royal Shrewsbury School Boat Club, which helped him get into Merton College, Oxford, to study engineering. At Oxford, he joined the university mountaineering club and rowed in the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race in 1922 and the winning crew in 1923—Oxford’s only victory between 1913 and 1937. Irvine had an affair with Marjory Agnes Standish Summers, a former chorus girl married to steel magnate Henry Hall Summers, who was 33 years her senior. While Irvine was on Everest, Henry began divorce proceedings.
In 1923, Irvine joined the Merton College Arctic Expedition to Spitsbergen, led by George Binney, and excelled in all aspects. Fellow mountaineers included Tom Longstaff and Noel Odell. Irvine realised he had met Odell in 1919, when he rode his motorcycle to the top of Foel Grach, a 3,000-foot Welsh peak, surprising Odell and his wife Mona, who had climbed it on foot. On Odell’s recommendation, Irvine was invited to the third British Everest expedition, seen as a possible “superman” the team needed. He was still a 21-year-old undergraduate. He sailed from Liverpool on the SS California on 29 February 1924 with George Mallory, Bentley Beetham, and John de Vars Hazard. Mallory and Irvine began their ascent from the North Col on 6 June, reaching Camp VI at 8,138 m. They departed on 8 June; Odell reported seeing them at 12:50 pm ascending what he believed was the Second Step, though which step became controversial. An ice axe believed to be Irvine's was found in 1933, and an oxygen cylinder in 1991. Mallory's body was found in 1999, with a rope still around his waist and a puncture wound to the forehead. No cameras were found, leaving the possibility of recoverable film.
